Parklands | Additions and alterations

These additions and alterations by TenTenConstruction consisted of a two-storey structure, built adjacent to an existing home. The construction company selected Cobute precast beam and decking system as its main structural elements not only for their structural performance but also for the ease of installation of the elements themselves as well as plumbing and electrical services.

Cobute precast beams are one the main structural elements in these additions.

The Cobute shutters for beams were designed to ensure fast installation on site, minimising the need for shuttering - a Cobute beam can be in fact installed and cast in less than two hours, with no timber waste generated on site. The beams were tested for failure by the Department of Structural Engineering of UCT in 2004, showing that R.C. beams constructed using the Cobute precast system have a higher bending moment capacity (approximately 10%) and practically the same shear strength capacity, compared to conventionally cast beams.

The Cobute slab system is one of the lightest on the market, with its dead-load that equals to 97kg/sqm. The elements are light to handle and interlock with precision, making installation time-efficient.  Beam-in-slabs were supplied to support the wall erection on the second floor - they, in fact, consists of a series of ribs without panels. Perforated panels were supplied with galvanized boxes cast in, to assist with lighting.
