Imperial Logistics had commissioned the creation of a new warehouse at the Montague Gardens branch in Cape Town. For the project, Cobute supplied 140sqm of its precast concrete slab system, installed and poured by P2 Construction.

Slab specs

The Cobute precast deck consists of three elements: ribs, interlocking panels and polystyrene blocks, cut to size to avoid any wastage on site.  The use of polystyrene does not only assist with thermal and acoustic insulation, but it also works as a void former, to decrease undue concrete consumption. This has a great impact on the incredible light weight of the system, which is roughly 97 kg/m²).

Slab specs: thickness

Cobute manufactures slabs in thicknesses varying from 150 to 350 mm, in 25 mm increments  for intermediate thickness. When designing different slab heights,  the only elements that will change are the height of the lattice rib and the thickness and length of the polystyrene blocks, without increasing the total amount of concrete needed.

R Value & Fire Certificate

The benefits of the system do not end here: the Cobute slab's  light elements are easy and quick to install while minimise room for mistakes on site. The deck contributes to the R Value of the structure, as well as holding  Fire Rating Certificate.  The R Value of the Cobute decking ranges according to the height of the slab, from 0.45 for H220mm to 0.49 for a H250mm slab. The slab holds a Fire Certificate rating of 150 minutes for a 230 mm thick slab.
